Foreign media reports that the rise of China's economic strength and international status has sparked a global "Chinese language craze." Elite American families are keen to hire nannies who speak Chinese, paying them $20,000 more annually than regular nannies.

According to a report by Taiwan's China Times Electronic News on April 13, there are 230 schools in the United States offering entirely Chinese-language education, with students from various ethnic backgrounds including Mexican, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese. A public school in Washington, D.C., with an all-Chinese curriculum, even saw parents setting up tents to queue for spots.

The BBC reports that the demand for Chinese-speaking nannies in the United States has been rapidly increasing since 2006. Rosh, an employee at Lifestyle Resources in New York, said that she has received many calls in the past few years from employers looking for nannies and housekeepers who speak Chinese "so their children can learn Chinese."

Chinese-speaking nannies are in high demand. Rosh said that compared to other nannies, they can earn an average of $20,000 more annually. One Chinese nanny, for example, was offered a $70,000 annual salary because two employers were vying for her services.

An American parent who hired a Chinese-speaking nanny said her son enjoys learning Chinese, so she hired a nanny who speaks Chinese so her child can learn outside of school. She also stated that "letting my son learn Chinese will bring long-term economic benefits."

The report states that in addition to the increased demand for Chinese-speaking nannies, all-Chinese schools are springing up across the United States, with 230 currently nationwide. Furthermore, an increasing number of non-Chinese American families are choosing to send their children to Chinese schools, and many public schools in California have included Chinese as a compulsory subject in lower grades.

A public elementary school in Washington, D.C., with an acceptance rate of only 3%, uses bilingual education. Classes for 3-4 year olds are taught entirely in Chinese, while classes starting in 5th grade alternate between Chinese and English each day. To gain admission to this school, many American parents are willing to camp out overnight and queue before registration.

Yang Yanli, a graduate of Beijing Normal University, immigrated to the United States with her husband. She taught in public schools and also worked as a tutor for many years. She once taught the children of former US President Reagan's staff in Maryland. In order to help the children learn Chinese, the family not only hired a Chinese-speaking nanny and teacher, but also invited a mainland Chinese student to stay at their home to create a Chinese learning environment for the children.

Yang Yanli stated that in many parts of the United States, foreign language learning begins in seventh grade. Previously, Spanish and French were the main languages, but in recent years, many schools have added Chinese, and the number of students taking Chinese courses at universities has also increased significantly.

According to a report on the Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily website on April 13, Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump, frequently shares glimpses of her children's lives on social media, including her daughter Arabella singing Chinese New Year songs and her son Joseph building with Chinese-language blocks. This is reportedly related to Ivanka hiring a nanny from mainland China to care for her children, revealing the phenomenon of wealthy Americans hiring Chinese-speaking nannies.

Some industry insiders claim that in North America, nannies with a certain level of education who speak both English and Mandarin can earn an average annual salary of $80,000.

It is understood that Ivanka Trump, busy with work, hired a nanny from mainland China, Xi Xi (phonetic), to care for her daughter Arabella after she was born. Besides daily care, Xi Xi also taught Arabella to speak Chinese. Arabella began attending language school to learn Chinese when she was 18 months old, and later her son Joseph also began learning Chinese before he was one year old.

According to mainland media reports, learning Chinese from a young age has become a popular trend among American children, especially those from elite families, even boosting the business of Chinese-speaking nannies. Many families are offering high salaries to hire nannies. A New York domestic service agency stated that clients hiring Chinese-speaking nannies include Chinese-American families, American families doing business with mainland China, and wealthy families who want their children to be more competitive in the future.
