Q: Are postpartum care centers in the US expensive? Yesterday, I discussed going to a postpartum care center with my husband, but he thinks it's unnecessary and wants his mother to take care of me instead. I think a postpartum care center would be better. I want to know if going to a postpartum care center is necessary? What are your thoughts?

A: In the US, I stayed at a postpartum care center run by Chinese people for 28 days and it cost $38,800.

    My wife developed postpartum complications.

I'm not saying postpartum care centers are useless.

A postpartum care center is essentially just paying to rent a room and then paying to hire a postpartum caregiver, it's that simple.

If you expect a postpartum care center to provide you with meticulous care, you're dreaming.

Let me tell you about what happened at the postpartum care center.

    1. The Five-Constant System.

The postpartum care center boasted about its "Five-Constant System": constant temperature, constant oxygen, constant humidity, constant quietness, and constant cleanliness.

Constant temperature: This simply means they have air conditioning and heating. When we first moved into the center, I thought the indoor temperature wouldn't need adjusting. However, the staff set the heating too high, and my son developed a rash from the heat. After I reported the problem, the staff switched to cooling, which made my wife develop postpartum illness – she experienced body aches all over, constantly. After complaining to the center again, they turned off the air conditioning. This postpartum illness will probably affect my wife for the rest of her life.

Constant oxygen: This just means there are windows that can be opened for ventilation, and at most, they have a fresh air system.

Constant humidity: This also relies on opening the windows for ventilation.

Constant quietness: This means there isn't much noise. During our stay, there were several instances of noisy renovations upstairs.

Constant cleanliness: This means there are cleaning staff to clean the premises.

    2. Postpartum Meals.

They provided several meals a day. I woke up around 6 AM and checked the sourcing channels and prices of the ingredients used by the postpartum center. The ingredients were the same as what I would buy at the local market; nothing particularly high-end or fancy.

However, the daily meal cost was $400, while the ingredient cost was less than $40 per day, and let's say the labor cost was also around $40.

The ingredients were ordinary, and the food tasted average, but they paid great attention to details like presentation. Women appreciate this kind of emotional value in a product.

    3. Postpartum Caregiver

The postpartum caregiver arranged by the maternity center was okay; there were no problems with her.

In my opinion, the purpose of a maternity center is to alleviate some of the anxiety that women experience after giving birth, and this anxiety is unnecessary. It allows these women to experience the postpartum recovery life they envision.

Although we spent a lot of money on the maternity center (my mother paid for it), my mother thinks it was worth it because all the unpleasant things that happened during the postpartum period were attributed to the maternity center, and that's its biggest benefit.
