A Chinese nanny in Arcadia, Los Angeles, injured a newborn baby's head on the evening of the 6th, raising questions about the technical requirements of the nanny profession and the safety risks faced by Chinese pregnant women and infants giving birth in the United States.

The Chinese homeowner of a residence in the 2000 block of Baldwin Street in Arcadia rented out three one-bedroom apartments to three pregnant Chinese women who had come to the U.S. to give birth. One of the women recently gave birth, and the homeowner hired a nanny to care for the mother and child. On the evening of the 6th, the nanny accidentally injured the baby's head, causing fluid buildup in the infant's skull. The baby was taken to the hospital, and a police report was filed on the 7th. However, Arcadia police only questioned those involved and did not make any arrests.

The Chinese homeowner stated on the 7th that the matter had been resolved and was not a major issue.

According to sources, the homeowner had been renting his house to pregnant women for about three years. His house is divided into a front and back yard; the front yard is used for rent, primarily to pregnant women from China who have come to the US to give birth. However, the house lacked safety features such as grab bars or other safety equipment for pregnant women. He charged each pregnant woman approximately $15,000 for three months, excluding the cost of hiring a postpartum nanny, whose salary is around $7,000 per month.

However, in the job market, most postpartum nannies are hired based solely on their experience caring for children. Ms. Chen, from a job agency in San Gabriel, stated that many people come to her agency daily looking for work, and postpartum nannies are among the higher-paying professions because they typically work long hours from morning till night. They only consider two criteria when hiring a postpartum nanny for employers: whether she has experience taking care of children and whether she is relatively young. However, these two criteria can be answered freely by job seekers, and they do not require them to provide evidence to prove it, since married women will have experience taking care of children.

She said they only handle finding nannies and collecting service fees from both parties. The quality of the nanny is assessed by the employer, and if the nanny is dismissed after only a few days, the service fee is not refunded. However, such lenient hiring standards inevitably lead to a wide range of nanny quality, and this uncertainty is mostly borne by the employer.

Ms. Li, an employer, previously hired a nanny who nearly dropped the baby while holding the infant. Fortunately, Ms. Li was present and reminded her in time; otherwise, who knows what might have happened. She said that nannies, like regular nannies, require a certain affinity and time for adjustment and evaluation. However, nannies take on a greater responsibility because they care for infants. Afterwards, she reflected on the incident and realized that as an employer, she should ensure the nanny has sufficient sleep and rest.

Ms. Zhao, a Chinese woman, gave birth last year and went through five or six postpartum nannies. She said that most nannies found through employment agencies were unreliable. Each claimed to have experience caring for babies, but these nannies either had poor hygiene habits or were inattentive to the baby. On several occasions, the baby cried for a long time, but the nanny slept soundly beside her, completely ignoring it. Therefore, she dismissed many after only two or three days of trial employment. She later tried to find nannies through friends' recommendations, but these experienced and reputable nannies were in high demand and charged exorbitant prices, with long waiting lists. She had no choice but to have her parents from China fly over to help care for the baby.

Nanny Aunt Jiang said she loves children and finds babies adorable. However, she had previously cared for a baby who was always fussy at night. She couldn't sleep during the day and couldn't sleep well at night either. She had discussed with the baby's mother whether the mother could care for the baby for the first half of the night while she cared for the baby for the second half, allowing her to at least get a few hours of sleep. However, the mother dismissed her the very next day. Postpartum nannies are human too; they also need sleep. A good postpartum nanny also needs a good employer; it's a two-way street.
